• Abstract
Digital assets on major platforms often lack diversity, underrepresenting the cultures of marginalized communities, particularly when it comes to mundane and everyday objects. This workshop will spotlight the Sari-Sari Xchange Assetory, a virtual asset library prototype created with and for the Asian diaspora community in Canada. We will explore the challenges and opportunities in building a sustainable, diverse, and accessible asset library for media art creation, including XR, games, and animation. Beyond being an online asset repository, the asset library serves as a form of storytelling to represent different cultures as well as the memories of contributors. Workshop participants will be asked to bring an object with them that has personal meaning, and will learn how to scan the object to create a 3D image of it. They are free to contribute to the SSX Assetory if they wish, and there will be a form available that allows the contributor to select the level of access they wish to give, if any, and what memories, stories, and histories of the object that they may wish to share.
